Politically Relevant Obscurity of the Week: “Molli and Max in the Future”

You have all seen Molli and Max in the Future, that beloved romcom set after Earth’s destruction with a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

There is one subplot that you may have forgotten about since you saw it the first time, which is a bit apropos to today’s political climate.

A “demon from the trash dimension” named Turboschmuck is running for ruler of the galaxy against Rachel, a “human woman with eczema” of Indian nationality. Although Turboschmuck has run on a platform of genocide against the Fish People and various other policies that will destroy the galaxy, Rachel’s eczema becomes the main campaign issue.

In the final debate, just before the instant vote, Rachel pleads, “Please take five minutes to think about why you hate me,” and Turboschmuck replies, “Rachel’s a bitch, vote Turboschmuck,” then puts the mic up his ass and farts, to wild applause from his fans.

After Turboschmuck wins, one Rachel supporter watching on TV says, “I don’t think he believes in any of that horrible stuff he said.”

Turboschmuck, in his acceptance speech, says, “I really do believe in all of that horrible stuff that I said. I’m not joking. I’m going to kill you all.”

He then reaches into the chest cavity of the debate moderator, pulls out the man’s heart and eats it.

We just thought that was kind of relevant.

It was filmed four years ago but presumably written during Trump 1 as a satire on the Hillary-Donald election, but it plays much more as a Kamala-Donald spoof, and not just because the actress playing the supposed Hillary standing is Aparna Nancherla, a comedian whose parents immigrated to the US from Hyderabad, India. It’s that Turboschmuck is much more like the free and unrestrained Trump of 2024 than the buffoonish but more conventional candidate he presented in 2016, and the audience and media reaction to Turboschmuck is more like 2024 as well, forthrightly admiring his showmanship and overlooking his shocking policy proposals as something he could not possibly mean. “I’m not some lying politician, I’m telling the truth here,” Turboschmuck says. “I’m gonna try to kill as many of you as I can, and, you know what, you heard it here first, I think that we should merge Reality and the Trash Dimension, are ya’ with me?”

If the bracing political satire doesn’t appeal to you (and there is more, something about how cheese production is causing a black hole that will swallow the galaxy in fifteen years, but people really love cheese, so….), then you’ll probably fall in love with the idea of Harry Met Sally in outer space, as Max (Aristotle Athari) and Molli (Zosia Mamet) meet cute, are inevitably separated for years, meet cute again, almost fall into each other’s arms but then don’t and then … but why spoil the surprise of the inevitable?

While the details of this future world are strange and inventive and satirized brilliantly, the romcom elements are as charming as they would be if this movie were set in Park Slope or Laramie or New Hope or Edinburgh, and Mamet and Athari play their roles straight, as though this were any romcom, no winking, no spoofiness. Weirdly enough, for a movie that cost almost nothing to make, the special effects are perfectly good; apparently, it costs almost nothing these days to dream up inspiringly beautiful scifi worlds on your laptop and seamlessly merge in human actors.

When the film was briefly released in theaters a year ago, the critics really did rave, so it’s absolutely unbelievable that you don’t already know Molli and Max, but now is your chance. You can watch this hilarious and vicious and gently romantic movie free on YouTube, or on any number of other subscription streamers. So watch it.
