Jazz this Week: Mike McGinnis + 9

Composer/Clarinetist/Saxophonist Mike McGinnis is known for innovative compositions that blend elements of traditional jazz with experimental improvisation; his last album, “Road Trip,” a collaboration with Jazz legend Bill Smith, was named one of the Village Voice’s ten best of the year and was described by WNYC’s David Garland as “full of adventure, surprises and beautiful vistas.”

After the Covid-fueled slowdown that tested so many musicians, McGinnis is back with a new album, Outing, on Sunnyside Records, and on Thursday, February 1st, at 7 pm, audiences will have the privilege of experiencing McGinnis’ artistry firsthand as he brings his boundary-pushing style to Brooklyn’s Barbès.

This “intimate” (tiny) venue in Park Slope, known for its eclectic programming and warm ambiance, serves as the perfect setting for an evening of McGinnis’s style of musical exploration.

Accompanied by his ensemble of nine top-tier musicians, whose individual talents are enough to command the stage in their own right, McGinnis will perform various pieces from the new album, which promise to push the boundaries of genre and convention and please and challenge jazz enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

If you’re not in Brooklyn, or you saw this article too late, take a look at his website for future tour dates.
